Fog Rolls In on Commencement Bay
Early Morning along Commencement Bay.
I awoke one morning and could see the stillness of the water in Commencement Bay and ran down to the waterfront with my camera. Long exposure times accentuated the stillness and black and white is in keeping with the fading Dickman Mill.
Tacoma, WA was once thought of as one of the largest lumber producers of the world. Nearly a century ago Tacoma was home to at least 30 lumber mills the ruins of which can be seen today. These pilings are remnants of the Dickman Mill built in 1889. It was in business through the Great Depression and closed in 1977. A large fire destroyed most of the mill in 1979 and it has been deteriorating into Puget Sound ever since. It provides amazing photography opportunities now and adorns Tacoma's waterfront walkway.
