Monumental Island is located off the east coast of Baffin Island in the Davis Strait. It was named by American Arctic explorer Charles Francis Hall, who discovered some of the missing artifacts from the Franklin expedition between 1864 and 1869. He named the island as a tribute to the memory of Sir John Franklin.
